How did January become January?

Image
Ever look at the calendar and wondered " What on earth are the meanings of January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November or December? " No? Okay, I did though! And thanks to the vast oceans of the internet, I've found the   real meanings of these month-names.  First of all, FUN FACT: January wasn't actually the first month of the year! In the system of the ancient Romans, the year began in March and ended in February. March Mars, the Roman God of War The ancient Romans insisted that all wars should stop during the time of celebration between the old and new years(What a fun time, it would have been!). Since March was the first month of the new year in ancient Rome, some historians believe the Romans named March after Mars, the Roman god of war (Get it? March, Mars... No? Me too.) April Aphrodite, Goddess of Beauty (DeviantArt) Three theories exist regarding the origin of April's name. Some say

The Chicken or The Egg?

Image
One of the more frustrating things in life is the question " What came first: The chicken or the egg?" Thinkers and idiots alike have explored the facts and gags regarding this question.  Robert Krulwich/NPR OR Robert Krulwich/NPR In one way, the question is unanswerable, since eggs hatch into chicken and chicken lay eggs... UGH! Who will bring about an answer to this question?! Will it ever be answered, or will it remain more of a mystery like the questions regarding the Bermuda Triangle (Here's a little Easter egg!) Fear not for I am here to save thee from thy frustrating thoughts about the egg and chicken dilemma! Actually, the solution to this problem wasn't put forward by me, the knight in shining armor is Robert Kulwich from N. P. R.  If one searches the vast horizons of YouTube, there is this video uploaded by AsapScience , where Mitchell Moffit asks "Is a chicken egg one laid by a chicken or only one that simply contai

The Hallelujah Mountains!

Image
Remember this place from the all-time blockbuster Avatar? No one could help wonder how James Cameron made this place. After watching the movie, I happened to have asked many people how exactly this set-up was made. I got a lot of weird and unbelievable so-called-facts that I surely did not believe(Until now!) The movie Avatar, in itself, has many breath-taking scenes and locations that have been made perfect by the movie's crew. But believe it or not, the Hallelujah Mountains featured in this movie are real! Yes, you read that right. Though the real mountains don't exactly float in mid-air, they are pretty epic to see even if they're rooted to the ground. Source: Wikipedia The Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is a one-of-a-kind tourist spot located in Zhangjiajie City in northern Hunan Province in the People's Republic of China. The maker's of the eponymous film drew inspiration for the Hallelujah Mountains from this very national park! After the movie

Indian Stereotypes

Image
There are somethings Indians do that cannot be challenged by any other nation. We have a rather bizarre sense of living and of using things that aren’t meant to be used that way! Read on to find out which of these stereotypes you've experienced!   1.   Dramatization of probably everything! If you were born a desi, “ drama ” is nothing new to you. From the soaps on Indian television to our mothers, Drama is a part of our life. Instances for drama are all around us; the overdramatic dad who constantly tell you the stories of how he went to school in his days: climbing hills, crossing rivers, evading aliens, fighting pirates, yeah, you get the idea. That over- dramatic class teacher of your’s who probably tells you “ Oye! You better study, you know, no? Last year students, very good students. They passed very goodly! You also pass like that. ” Everywhere you go, the drama will follow you and trust me, there’s no escaping it! 2.    Surveillance. Don’t get me wro

Some Marvel- grade stuff!

Hey there! Most of us grew up watching and reading about Marvel heroes (DC too!). But the superheroes of those comics aren't what we see today through CGI magic. Time has given our superheroes lots of upgrades and one such hero is Deadpool.  But this one ain't about that *bleeping* son of a *bleep*.  This is about  Francis Freeman aka  Ajax,  Posh Spice,  A British Villain,  British Shitstick,  Cockfissle,  Muppet Fart,  Dickless,  Francesca,  Shit-spackled and  Basil Fawlty. Ajax  (born  Francis Freeman ) was a human who gained immunity to pain and enhanced reflexes from an augmentation program. Let's just cut to the chase. How great would it be if you had immunity to pain, huh? Well, it's possible and there are people who experience this! But this cool upgrade comes with a lot, and I mean a LOT of suffering. People with  Familial Dysautonomia are supposed to be immune to pain! This is sometimes called Riley- Day Syndrome.  People who understand the cra

Wait... What did you just think?

Put your thinking caps on! Let's travel a few years (I mean, a lot of years!) into the future. You walk out of your house, breathing in the aroma of freshly cut grass in the morning. You happen to see this girl jogging down the lane. Naturally, every boy's first thought (I repeat, just think!) "Woah, she's hot!". The girl stops jogging, turns to you, comes up and *bam* slaps you right in the face! Wait, what? That's impossible!  Yeah, it is.. Or is it? Just imagine, every person having the ability to read minds. Kinda creepy! We wouldn't be able to live like we did, we wouldn't be able to think like we did, we won't be able to set our imagination free! But on the fun side, you wouldn't have to whisper to someone; just think about what you want to tell them and Voila! But just imagine your family knowing about all your dirty thoughts, imagine your wife knowing about your fantasy with that woman from work and most importantly, imagi

Mar Sem Fim

Hey there! The world is a strange place and what happens in it is even stranger. Are you a travel freak? Ever picked up a globe, closed your eyes, touched a spot and decided that you'll go there? Or maybe decided on someone's word that you'll someday visit the United States, the United Kingdom, Paris or India? Everyone has wishes, everyone has dreams; dreams to visit exotic places and serene lands. I've met a lot of people desperate to travel, but not one man has ever told me that he wishes to travel to ...   Image courtesy: Wikipedia Hold your horses, you don't have to freeze to death visiting Antarctica! But there is one place in particular that caught my attention:  Maxwell Bay of Ardley Cove, Antarctica. And know the reason why? Image courtest: Amusing Planet This is the Mar Sem Fim which means "Endless Sea" in English, a Brazilian yacht that was shipwrecked, sunk and was frozen on 7th April, 2012. Winds that blew at mo
